Me and the Layla

Me and the Layla

Hi! I'm Alex. I'm a painter, tattooist, maker of things.

I've been creating art for as long as I can remember, and started painting late in high school and into college. From there I began live painting, mostly with friend's bands and at local music festivals I attended. I love flowing with the energy of live music and people- it finds its way into the paintings and infuses them with something extra.

In addition to live art, I spend a lot of time in my studio- mostly with acrylic on panel. Painting is my main focus but I also enjoy costume construction and most recently clothing design. Check my online store for art printed on tanks, tops and (coming soon!) leggings.

I've been working as a full time professional tattooist in Minneapolis since 2009 and just relocated to Salt Lake City, UT. I’m taking the opportunity of being in a new space to ground down and delve deep into my art, and will also be working part time at Locust tattoo in SLC (265 E 900 S). If you are interested in tattoo work please email me at alexgregorytattoo(at)gmail.com. Books open at this time.

Artist statement

I am driven to create art that connects to the natural world. My subject matter is often plant and animal focused, drawing on organic aspects as well as geometric forms to create an image. Animal totems have long been used as teachers, spirit guides, and reflections of one’s self, and I think of my paintings as a representation of the mystic energy these creatures hold, rather than a direct portrait of the animals themselves.

With a spotlight on the biological, my work also features strong geometric elements- stemming from the belief that everything in nature can be related to geometry, like the spiraling rate at which a shell grows outward, or the perfect hexagonal cells constructed by honeybees. I have found that symmetry and balance are important to me, as well as duality: the opposing forces of light and dark, masculine and feminine. With that in mind, I pay careful attention to color pallet to help convey these ideas in a definitive atmosphere.

It is my intention to create works that viewers can identify with on a personal level, whether it be associating with the specific plant or animal entities, falling into sacred geometry and patterns, or resonating with the color frequency.
